General Election Day is tomorrow. Here’s a guide from Spotlight PA for how to vote, where to find your polling place and who’s who on the ballot. 

Coming up this week, the 25th Police District is hosting a post-Halloween celebration, a couple of writing workshops and a few other events are underway. Check it out below.

Recent News 

Fab Youth Philly gives teens first-time job experiences otherwise in short supply

Since 2017, Fab Youth Philly has supported over 500 teens and young adults in the city through summer and after-school job opportunities, workshops, training, and field trips to colleges with guest speakers. The organization also offers lifeguard training and Red Cross babysitting certification programs year-round.

The organization is one of a small number of youth-serving organizations in Kensington that pays teens for meaningful work – a strategy that experts say is key to improving economic mobility in this low-income, high-crime neighborhood.

Weekly Small Business Spotlight

The Small Business Storytelling Project is a collaborative initiative produced by Kensington Voice in partnership with the New Kensington Community Development Corporation (NKCDC) and funded by LISC Philadelphia. The project aims to highlight and support local entrepreneurs and small businesses in Kensington through original reporting and photography.

We took a small break last week, but look out for fresh coverage next Wednesday!

Nov. 3

  • One-on-one job assistance at Lillian Marrero Library (601 W. Lehigh Ave.) from 2 to 4:30 p.m. A Community Workforce Connector will offer folks individualized support with résumé development, career counseling, and more.
  • “Fright at the Lighthouse” post-Halloween event hosted by the 25th Police District at The Lighthouse (101 E. Erie Ave.) from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be trunk-or-treating, haunted hayride and more. Visit this link to register and learn more.

Nov. 4

  • Poetry workshop at Kensington Library (104 W. Dauphin St.) at 4 p.m. Author David Acosta will guide participants through a variety of writing exercises with the goal of completing a finished poem.
  • Fantasy fiction writing workshop at Richmond Library (2987 Almond St.) from 5 to 6 p.m. This free workshop offers support with fantasy writing, world-building and character design through peer-to-peer writing support.

Nov. 6

  • Social services open office hours at Kensington library (104 W. Dauphin St.) at 2 p.m. A Social Worker will be present to help with finding, navigating, and connecting to relevant community and government agencies and resources.

  • Mothers Helping Mothers Women of Power Group supported by Mural Arts and NKCDC meets at the CORE at Esperanza Health Center (3222 H Street)) from 12:30-2:30 p.m. to heal from trauma related to gun violence and overdose. Email Brenda Mosley at byfaithenternal@gmail.com to learn more.
