Eddie Irizarry supporters call for harsher consequences following verdict for Philly PD officer who killed him

Philadelphia Police Department officer Mark Dial, who shot and killed 27-year-old Eddie Irizarry during a traffic stop in Kensington in 2023, has been convicted of manslaughter.

On Thursday, a Philadelphia jury found Dial guilty of manslaughter, possession of an instrument of a crime and recklessly endangering another person. They found him not guilty of the more severe charge of third-degree murder.

Philadelphia activists are calling the conviction a “win,” while also decrying the city and legal system’s failure to adequately address police killings.

Creating Sanctuary: Kensington cooking and leadership program lowers stress, opens doors for teens

In 2023, Bryan Belknap had to make a change.

The grant that had funded his youth mentorship work at Kensington’s McPherson Square Library for eight years was expiring. He worried that his departure would leave teens without the stability and encouragement he’d tried so hard to provide.

“I got to know a bunch of young people who faced lots of challenges and saw how the current system often fails them,” Belknap said. “It gave me time to think about what a program would  look like that didn't let these young people fall through the cracks.”

Photos of Kensington: Peacemakers Win Cure Violence Basketball Championship

The free basketball league, organized by NKCDC’s Cure Violence team and Esperanza Health Center, is part of a larger effort to prevent violence and create safe spaces for young men in Kensington through mentorship, connection, and sport.

On March 31, community members gathered at Esperanza’s CORE Fitness Center for the final tournament game and postseason celebration of the Free Kensington Community Winter Basketball League.

After weeks of playoffs, the two remaining teams — Peacemakers and Cure Temple — faced off for the championship title. The Peacemakers won, earning the league’s first championship trophy. The event also featured food, music, and a celebration honoring the players' hard work and growth on and off the court.
